Breaking up is hard to do. But if you’re singer-songwriter Pete Yorn, things fall into place. Yorn had Serge Gainsbourg’s recordings on his mind (including “Bonnie & Clyde” featuring Brigitte Bardot) when he began working on the forthcoming Break Up. Scarlett Johansson steps in for Bardot as the album of duets chronicles the rise and demise of a love affair. Current single “Relator” is the opener that gives way to aptly titled tracks like “Wear and Tear” and “Search Your Heart.” For more on their fallout-themed work, check out www.thebreakupalbum.com.—Erica Cupido, FLARE Intern

This is not a love story. Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel star in 500 Days of Summer, a film that includes both the beginning and end of a relationship. Director Marc Webb’s offbeat film takes traditional rom-com elements, without the formulaic approach. Much like Garden State and Juno before it, 500 Days of Summer arrives this Friday with a combination of charming characters and a standout indie soundtrack. Among the pop songs in the film is a cover of the Smiths’ “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want,” by Deschanel’s group, She & Him.

Get ready to see a lot more of Alanis Morissette. She recently teamed up with Woody Harrelson to create a line of environmentally friendly jeans for Reco. The pair is teaming up again this fall to work on the comedy The Other Side which also stars Lindsay Lohan and Giovanni Ribisi. And, then of course there’s the Weeds gig. Morissette plays Mary Louise Parker’s character’s baby doc. Go Alanis, Go!—Alexandra Breen

I just checked out Jason Schwartzman’s new video for his latest Coconut Records tune”Any Fun.” Shot in black in white with a summery home video vibe, it features Chloe Sevigny skate boarding. I really like the song and the video – Schwartzman sure knows how to pick his ladies, the last album featured Kirsten Dunst and Zooey Deschanel. —Alexandra Breen
