Lotus Aroma

We’re not sure what’s worse––battling cottage bugs or applying the stinky, sticky chemical cocktail that is our standard bug spray. In order to avoid taking refuge under a mosquito net surrounded by citronella candles we’ve happily packed Lotus Aroma’s Essential Oil in Ceylon Citronella. A couple of drops in our SPF or body lotion and the fresh citrus scent will keep the pesky bugs at bay. The eco-certified Quebec brand also offers Classic Lavender and Tea Tree formulas to help ease the pain of cuts and bites in case one of the critters manages to sneak by. Available across Canada in select drugstores or call (800) 588-5333.

Donna Karan S/S 09Girlactik Eye Glaze
Girlactik Beauty, the little-known Hollywood makeup line behind many a red carpet glow, has finally landed in select Sephora stores across Canada. Founder Galit Strugano created the collection when she became frustrated with slip and slide highlight and shimmer products that refused to stay put on her celeb clients. The lightweight and waterproof Eye Glaze is a great multi-purpose tool for summer. Ditch your cumbersome makeup brushes and experiment with blending the creamy, pearlized formulas together with your finger or using them as an eyeliner. You can also wear the lighter colours as a primer or blend it on your cheekbones to get an ethereal glow like the heavenly gals backstage at Donna Karan.

Our latest find for supple, sexy gams without having to shell out significant coin is a little drugstore secret from Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula. All of their products are priced to please, but we like the lighter formula of their lotion which is fast-absorbing and contains Vitamin E––perfect for slathering on post-shower for smooth and glowy skin sans the grease. Palmer’s also contains 100% pure cocoa butter, unlike many moisturizers that are formulated with a large percentage of water, and is ideal for helping to smooth away scars. It’s the perfect secret weapon for breaking out your micro-mini or short shorts. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Lotion, $5.99, available across Canada at select drugstores.

Splashing out on the summer version of your trademark fragrance can be a bit of a dilemma. Yes, a lighter scent is necessary for the sticky weather, but why not try something that’s all together new and fresh? We’re loving the possibilities of Clean limited edition Summer Eau Fraiche, $52. The light and dreamy scent has notes of Italian Limoncello, Crisp Bergamot, Rose Ice, Mirabelle Plum, and Lily of the Valley. Its unique formula contains less alcohol than a traditional Eau de Toilette or Parfum, which allows for the moisturizing effects of Aloe Leaf and Chamomile extracts. Available across Canada at Sephora, or call (877)-SEPHORA.

In honour of National Sun Awareness Week, L’Oréal’s Consulting Dermatologist, Dr. Lydia Evans, tipped us off on the best ways to enjoy the glorious sunshine (once it finally arrives!) this summer:

  • Use a palm full of sunscreen (or 20 mL) to cover your entire body. For maximum protection, apply 30 minutes before getting outdoors and re-apply every 2 hours.
  • For extra UV protection in intense sun, don a glamazon getup: a wide-brimmed hat and shades.
  • Avoid slathering sunscreen on directly after swimming or taking a shower to ensure it absorbs properly.
  • Your prized visage is most sensitive to the sun’s rays, so pay attention to the areas that are most forgotten: your nose, eyelids, ears, hair line, and your mouth’s contour.
  • Avoid the sun during peak hours–– between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.–– to prevent sunburn, skin damage, and dehydration.
  • Use at least SPF 30 and even more if you’re headed south for vacay.
